Circles of the Self
Psychological Assessment
Circles of the Self is a non-verbal, in-depth, intuitive assessment tool based on mandalas that combines the sacred geometry of the circle with modern psychology and the life cycle. The assessment uses ancient universal symbols and colors to identify what an individual may be consciously and unconsciously working through or is being impacted by. This can potentially include cognitive, emotional, energetic, somatic, and spiritual strengths and struggles.
Mandala is a Sanskrit word meaning circle, Madalas are found in many forms across time and cultures and have been used to explore personal growth, self-expression, and spiritual transformation. They can be instrumental in integrating the emerging content of the unconscious mind when our cognitive understanding of an experience may be limited. Mandala drawings were brought to the field of psychology by Carl Jung. Jung used and studied mandalas from 1918 until he died in 1961. In his book Memories, Dreams and Reflections (1957), he states “In the product of the unconscious we discover mandala symbols, that is, circular and quaternity figures which express wholeness, and whenever we wish to express wholeness, we employ just such figures.” Jung’s work inspired theories by Ken Wilbur, Jean Gebser, Erik Erikson, and art therapist, Joan Kellogg. Carol Bush created this modern application of mandalas in the Circles of the Self.
Used as a projective testing instrument, the individual’s selection of symbols and colors indicates a diagnostic overview of their process and shows ongoing progress in therapy. This tool is irreplaceable in adding to understanding a client’s inner world.
